Sikkim State Commission for Women

Sikkim State Commission for Women

     The Sikkim State Commission for Women has started functioning from November  2002
with the following eight members including Chairperson.

1.  Mrs. Manita Pradhan                - Chairperson

2.  Mrs. R. Ongmu                          - Member

3.  Mrs. Yon Kumari Gurung         - Member

4.  Miss Bishnu Subba                   - Member

5.  Miss K.T. Lepcha                      - Member

6.  Mrs. Kavita Chettri                     - Member

7.  Miss A.J. Sharma (Advocate)  - Member

8.  Miss N. Thapa                           - Member Secretary

The Commission  performs the following functions :

1.     Make an in-depth studies on :

  • The economic, Social, Health situations     of the women in the State.

  • Condition in which women work in factories, establishment, construction sites etc.

2.     Compile information on instance of all  offences against women.

3.     Coordinate   with     the    State   Cell / District   Cells   for atrocities against women.

4.     Receive   complaints  on  atrocities / offences   against women, rehabilitation of
        deserted and destitute women,
atrocities   on  women in   custody,  women  forced  into
      prostitution etc.

5.      Assist,   train  and  orient NGOs  in  the   State  in   legal counseling of poor women
         and  enabling such women to get
legal aid.

6.      Inspect or  cause to be  inspected a jail, remand home,  various institution etc.

7.      Perform functions in   relation to any other matter which may be referred to it by the
         State Govt.

  • The commission shall also have the power of the Civil Court trying  a suit in respect of the following matters :Summoning and enforcing attendance of any person from any part of India and examining them  on oath.

  • Requiring the discovery and production of any document.

  • Receiving evidence on affidavits.

  • Requisitioning any public record or copy thereof from any court or office.

  • Issuing commission for the examination of witness and documents.

  • Any other matter as required  may be prescribed.

       This Commission is a powerful advocate for women's rights created with the purpose of safe guarding the interest of women all over the state. Women seeking help of the commission may write to the Chairperson or the member secretary in the following address:-
